Every year, hundreds of thousands of prospective students worldwide take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) to try to gain acceptance into graduate programs in the US, Canada, and a few other countries. Learners typically spend weeks preparing to take the exam, often using online resources.

About the GRE

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test developed and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). It’s an admission requirement for many graduate schools, especially in the United States and Canada. The GRE, offered as a computer-based exam, measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing.

GRE format and timing

Established in 1936, the GRE exam was revised in 2023. The exam now lasts just under 2 hours (previously 3 hours, 45 minutes). The GRE exam consists of five sections: an analytical writing section, two verbal reasoning sections, and two quantitative reasoning sections.

The Analytical Writing section will always be first. The Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections may appear in any order after the Analytical Writing section.

GRE Scores

The analytical writing section is scored by e-rater, a natural-language processing program developed by ETS. All essay responses on the Analytical Writing section are reviewed by trained analysts using ETS essay similarity detection software and by experienced content experts.

The verbal and quantitative reasoning sections are scored only by a computer. The verbal and quantitative reasoning parts of the GRE are “section-level adaptive”, meaning that your success in the first section will impact the difficulty of the second section. This allows more granular results. Ultimately, scores are scaled to compensate for these difficulty differences.

Hence, the final GRE score has three parts. You’ll receive your score report 8–10 days after your test date.
