The BMW M3 wowed gearheads when it first turned up in 1986, the vehicle being a performance version of the German marque’s 3-Series sedan and coupe. While it was never the most powerful performance car in the world – with its compact 2.3-litre inline-four putting out less than 200 hp – it was lauded for its excellent handling. BMW used its extensive racing experience to design the M3 to be as balanced as possible, while its steering was well-weighted to give the driver a good feel for the road they were tackling.
