What does it take to become one of the world’s top alpine skiers when you grow up in London? Grit, vision—and a willingness to train on eight-second plastic slopes.
In this inspiring episode of Ski Moms, we sit down with Chemmy Alcott, a four-time Olympian, BBC Ski Sunday presenter, and mom of two. Her story is one of fierce determination, reinvention, and building confidence—both on the mountain and in motherhood.

From Dry Slopes to the World Stage
Chemmy’s entry into skiing defied all odds. Raised in London, she got her start on dry slopes—plastic “hairbrush” tracks—far from the snow-covered Alps. At just 10 years old, she convinced her parents to let her fly solo to New Zealand for two months of training. It was a bold move that would shape her trajectory for years to come.
Chemmy went on to represent Great Britain at four Winter Olympics, competing in all five alpine skiing disciplines. Her tenacity and talent took her within 1.8 seconds of an Olympic medal at Sochi 2014—an achievement that still fuels her passion for the sport.
The Turning Point: Letting Go of Fear
In the interview, Chemmy opens up about a pivotal mindset shift in her racing career. For eight years, she skied at just 80% capacity, held back by fear of failure. Her breakthrough came at Sölden, when she finally embraced 100% effort—and the risks that came with it.
“My injuries are something I’m really proud of because every time I got injured was a moment where I was choosing to be my very best and take those chances,” she shares.
It was this fearless approach that defined her greatest moments on the mountain—and ultimately shaped her approach to life after racing.
Life After Racing: Coaching Confidence and Raising Resilient Kids
After a serious leg injury and a stark warning from her surgeon, Chemmy made the difficult decision to retire. Today, she’s channeling her experience into Carpe Diem Coaching, a family-run program with her husband, Dougie Crawford. Together, they lead ski camps across Europe for all ages—from adventurous kids to confident skiers in their 80s.
The mission? To build confidence through challenge, both mentally and physically.
“I always say that I was made to be a ski racer. I got his glutes and her lungs and I was made to be this mountain goat.”
As a mom to two young boys (ages 8 and 6), Chemmy is also navigating the juggle of motherhood and career. Whether she’s coaching, skiing, or appearing on BBC’s iconic Ski Sunday, she brings the same fearless energy to everything she does.

Embracing Wellness: From Pain to Purpose
After battling chronic pain for over a decade, Chemmy found unexpected relief through CBD and meditation, leading her to found Swiss Mountain Rescue, a health and wellness brand rooted in natural recovery. It’s part of her evolving mission to empower others—not just on the slopes, but in everyday life.
