- A Massachusetts man was trapped when a jack failed under his car.
- Police, firefighters, and EMS lifted the vehicle to free him.
- Bodycam footage captures the tense rescue in the parking lot.
Most of us have put ourselves in a less-than-super-safe situation with our cars. It usually happens behind the wheel, but one Mercedes-Benz owner recently found himself in danger underneath his vehicle. While attempting to check out a possible issue at an auto parts store, his jack failed, and the SUV fell on him. Thanks to one officer’s quick action, the owner survived and avoided life-threatening injury.
Police in Webster, Massachusetts, say officers, firefighters, and EMS crews rushed to an Advanced Auto Parts on East Main Street on February 17 after someone reported that a man had become trapped under a vehicle. Video from a police bodycam shows the moment when the very first officer, Nicholas Caruso, arrived on scene.

As he walks up to the Mercedes-Benz GL, the man is already unresponsive. For reasons we may never know, nobody has to this point used a jack from the store itself to free the man. The officer gives clear directions to those around to get a jack and to chock the back wheel
to keep the Mercedes from rolling as additional authorities arrive on scene.

Just over two minutes after arriving, the first officer on the scene is able to pull the man from under the car to safety. Webster authorities say he began breathing as soon as he was out.
“This was a great response by all of Webster’s public safety team. This is yet another example of the collaboration displayed by the members who serve our community every day. We are fortunate to have such dedicated men and women serving and protecting our community,” said the department in a post on Facebook.
The entire incident highlights just how fast a situation involving automotive maintenance can become life-threatening. We’ve reported on several instances in the past of jacks failing, cars falling off of lifts, or rolling away after an owner didn’t secure them. Thankfully, this incident ended with the victim surviving without serious injury.
