Larger engines generally meant more power and torque, making displacement one of the simplest ways to gauge a vehicle’s performance. As automakers and consumers began prioritizing efficiency, however, engine sizes steadily shrank, while turbocharging and electrification ensured performance didn’t fall as displacement decreased.
