Walmart announced Monday it would lower prices on thousands of products, including beef, laundry detergent, Coca-Cola, household items and other seasonal summer items. The price cuts will go into effect in stores and online, at Walmart and Sam’s Club.
The price cuts include deals up to more than half off marked prices. A pound of ground beef is down from $6.74 to $5.94; corn on the cob is down $0.25 each from $0.68; a bag of red cherries is down from $11.18 to $5.63; and Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar 24-packs are now $8.97, down from $9.97.
A Walmart spokesperson said the price cuts went into effect and have been available online since early last week.
Annual inflation in the U.S. reached a three-year high of 4.2% in May, largely due to the Iran war and surging energy prices—and it’s pushing people to change their grocery shopping habits. A CNN poll of 1,499 U.S. adults conducted in May shows 61% of Americans have changed what groceries they purchase to stay within budget.
Rising food costs seeped into workplace meals, too. A 2025 ezCater study shows employees spent more than $108 a week on work lunches compared to $88 from the year before. In part because of rising costs, 51% of employees skip lunch at least once a week, according to the study.
While Walmart is the largest chain to cut costs on its products, other retailers have also reduced prices to keep up with competition and meet consumers’ strained budgets.
In May, Kroger CEO Greg Foran said the company would test price reductions before cutting prices on thousands of items. In May, Costco also announced it had cut prices on several Kirkland Signature products, like chicken wings and chocolate almonds.
In March, Target said it would reduce prices on thousands of home essentials, apparel and “pantry staples.” Even retailers known for higher prices, like Whole Foods Market, have cut prices. According to The New York Times, Whole Foods reduced prices on 900 products across its private brands.
Unaffordability and high grocery costs have been a point of contention in politics. In a Truth Social post on Monday, President Donald Trump alleged the price cuts came at his administration’s request.
“I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday,” Trump wrote in the post.
“This is a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.,” Trump added.
Walmart made no mention of Trump in its press release about the price cuts.
