Australia is moving forward with strict mandates for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). By March 2029, active lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with cyclist detection will become compulsory on all new passenger and light-commercial vehicles imported into the country. This aggressive regulatory shift creates a stark contrast with North American policies, forcing automakers to navigate a fractured global market.
While the Australian government forces manufacturers to adopt active safety technologies, United States regulators remain stalled. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently postponed its own regulatory overhaul. Because federal regulators delayed updates to national crash-testing protocols, automakers face an environment where a vehicle deemed fully compliant in the US might soon be illegal to sell overseas.

Safer Down Under?
According to a report from Drive, the Australian mandate will roll out in phases. Newly introduced vehicle models must comply starting March 1, 2028, before the rule encompasses all new imports the following year. Government projections indicate this requirement could reduce fatal light-vehicle crashes by nearly 12%, potentially saving thousands of lives over the coming decades.
The legislation does include specific exemptions for heavier utility vehicles. Heavy-duty trucks and vans exceeding a 3.5-tonne Gross Vehicle Mass, such as the Ram 1500, will only require passive lane departure warnings rather than active steering intervention. Used cars and vehicles imported prior to the 2029 deadline remain completely unaffected by the retroactive mandate.
Meeting these strict parameters requires flawless software execution, an area where manufacturers currently display mixed results. Recent testing shows stark contrasts in autonomous reliability; while the Tesla Model Yexcelled in ADAS evaluations, competitors are stumbling.
