Toyota’s GR GT Supercar Will Come In Two Flavors: Spicy And Extra Hot

New images captured by the Autoblog spy photographers at the Nürburgring confirm that Toyota is working on a more hardcore, racier version of its GR GT supercar. The upgrades make the more aggressive model look a lot like the GR GT3 that will compete in motorsport, but it’s a road-going creation that is expected to have the Porsche 911 GT3 RS firmly in its sights. Toyota hinted at producing a more extreme model earlier this month, with the “regular” GR GT not having any active aerodynamic bodywork or adaptive suspension, and this could be the version that makes those innovations happen. Let’s take a closer look.

Toyota GR GT Looks Like It’s Getting An RS Variant

The new model could carry the ‘GR GT RS’ moniker, and while the name sounds like an awkward product code for some piece of office equipment, it would make Toyota’s intentions clear. Whatever the nomenclature, the design provides a clear vision of what Toyota is building: a track-focused but road-legal supercar. At the front, there’s a larger front splitter for added downforce over the front axle, and at the rear, a top-hung/swan-neck wing balances the aero load. This may have a DRS-style low-drag function like the aforementioned Porsche. There are also new and very aggressive RS-style louvered vents on the fenders, which help reduce turbulence in the wheel wells and thus limit front-end lift.

Elsewhere, new dive planes on the front bumper will also contribute to greater downforce. The rear end doesn’t appear to have any major changes, but the integrated ducktail spoiler of the regular GR GT, which was also testing on the Nordschleife, has been covered in camo on the more extreme prototype, potentially indicating that it’s been integrated with the trunk. We can also expect some changes inside, but it’s unclear whether this more extreme GR GT will be a standalone model like the GT3 RS or an optional package, like a Manthey kit for a GT3.

More Power On The Table: Toyota GR GT Faces Stiff Competition

When the GR GT was officially unveiled in December last year, the twin-turbocharged dry-sumped V8 and electric motor were said to produce 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, all going to an eight-speed transaxle at the back of the car, with a top speed of over 199 mph. But Toyota said that these figures were only preliminary, with horsepower, torque, top speed, and weight figures likely to improve before the production car arrives sometime next year. With the sighting of a more extreme variant, it’s quite possible that the base GR GT will make 641 hp and the hardcore version could make more. And it could need all the oomph it can get – Porsche’s next 911 GT3 RS may be turbocharged for the first time, and Mercedes-AMG is developing a Black Series version of its GT coupe.
