Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new 2028 GLA, a thorough reworking of the brand’s entry-level luxury SUV that brings with it a roomier cabin, updated tech and the option to go fully electric or hybrid.

The next-generation GLA is set to make its way to U.S. dealers in the latter part of 2027. It rides on an extended wheelbase with a more refined exterior, and inside there is a new digital cockpit to match. For those looking at powertrain choices, the new GLA comes as either an all-electric or a 48-volt hybrid.
The most notable shift for the 2028 model year is the arrival of a dedicated electric roster. Mercedes is introducing two battery-electric variants: the 268-hp GLA 250+ and the 349-hp GLA 350 4MATIC. The top-end 350 will do 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds.

Under the skin, both EVs are built on an 800-volt architecture and have an 85-kWh pack. This means they can take advantage of DC fast charging; according to Mercedes, a DC fast charger can add up to 168 miles of range in just 10 minutes. On the WLTP cycle the total range is at 657 kilometers (408 miles), though we don’t have the EPA numbers yet, but it will probably have around 350 miles of range.

For buyers who prefer a gasoline engine, the hybrid is still in the mix. It makes use of a new 48-volt system mated to a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor within the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. In low-speed city traffic the GLA can run on electricity alone, and regenerative braking and coasting serve to boost fuel economy. U.S. power and economy stats are yet to be released.
While the redesigned GLA sits a bit lower than before, the extra 2.4 inches in wheelbase translates to more room for everyone in the cabin. Rear passengers have more legroom and the cargo hold is bigger; the electric versions even get a front trunk.

A panoramic glass roof is standard for an open feel, but step up to a higher trim and one can have the MBUX Superscreen. It is all under one piece of glass, with a 14-inch center and passenger display flanking the 10.25-inch instrument cluster. The infotainment has been given the latest MBUX Virtual Assistant powered by generative AI from the likes of ChatGPT and Microsoft for a more conversational experience. And with Google Maps woven into the system, planning a route around the battery’s range is straightforward.
There is an athletic quality to the new GLA’s styling, with cleaner lines and a wider rear track. You will find the traditional star-pattern grille on the hybrids, whereas the electric models sport an illuminated version with an LED signature. For a sportier tone, the AMG Line and Plus packages offer distinct interior and exterior touches, and there is a Night Edition with blacked-out trim and special paint.
On the technology front, Mercedes has made a point of expanding what is available. Adaptive cruise control and safety systems are standard across the board. But there are also options like a 360-degree camera and “Transparent Hood” for off-road visibility.
Pricing and full specs for the U.S. market have not been unveiled by Mercedes-Benz, but with the 2028 GLA due in showrooms in the second half of 2027, more should be forthcoming.
