The W16 Is Still Taking Requests
Bugatti has released a teaser for the third one-off model under its Programme Solitaire. Not much has been revealed, but the video effectively confirms that the upcoming commission will use the brand’s 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine – the powerplant that powered the Veyron, Chiron, and their numerous derivatives.
That may be a noteworthy detail, given that Bugatti has switched the iconic W16 formula for a naturally aspirated V16 and three electric motors in the Tourbillon. The transition came after Bugatti moved from direct Volkswagen Group ownership into the Bugatti Rimac joint venture in 2021. The W16 itself was developed during the Volkswagen era by combining two narrow-angle VR8 cylinder banks.
As such, the upcoming one-off will preserve the potent engine that helped the French hypercar manufacturer break speed records while still providing the refinement welcomed in everyday driving, although fuel economy is another conversation.
Back in the Spotlight
Bugatti wrote only, “The Sculpture of Speed. Captured, shaped, preserved,” in its social-media teaser while showing a glimpse of the W16 plaque. The engine could produce around 1,600 PS (1,578 horsepower), matching the more powerful version used in the previous Solitaire creations rather than the base Chiron’s 1,500 PS (1,479 hp).
The earlier one-offs are the Brouillard and F.K.P. Hommage. The Brouillard debuted in August 2025 and paid tribute to Ettore Bugatti’s favorite horse. It features flowing, muscular surfaces and an X-shaped taillight treatment reminiscent of the Mistral – considered the world’s fastest roadster. The F.K.P. Hommage, meanwhile, was introduced earlier this year with a more familiar design inspired by the original Veyron.
One Very Loud Debut
According to The Supercar Blog, the third Programme Solitaire creation will make its public debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week in California this month. Other rumored debuts include a McLaren hypercar with a manual transmission and a more track-focused SV version of the Lamborghini Revuelto.
Looking ahead, although Bugatti has not confirmed it, future Solitaire commissions could eventually adopt the Tourbillon’s hybrid V16 powertrain. After all, many expected the W16 to be done with the Mistral, yet another one is on the way. Tourbillon deliveries are scheduled to begin this year. For reference, it produces a combined 1,800 PS (about 1,775 horsepower) and can also drive on electric power alone.
