Honda enjoys growth as Japanese rivals slump
American Honda has a reason to celebrate after posting its best U.S. July sales in seven years. Combined sales of Honda and Acura vehicles reached 136,549 units last month, an increase of 12.8%. On its own, Honda accounted for 124,553 sales in July, up by 12.3% as hybrids and passenger cars posted significant gains. July’s performance stands out even more considering that Mazda and Toyota both posted year-over-year declines in the same month, suggesting that Honda’s current lineup is appealing to the need for efficient and affordable new cars.

Sales of Honda cars were particularly impressive in July, increasing by 35.7%. That’s down to strong performances from the Civic and Accord, which posted their best July sales since 2021 and 2019, respectively. Hybrids continue to fly out of showrooms in 2026, with a record total of 36,609 sold last month. Of the CR-V’s sales mix, 54% are now hybrids, and 41% of all Accords sold are hybrids, too. Here’s a look at sales of Honda models in July.

The CR-V remained America’s best-selling SUV last month as Toyota continues to struggle with supply issues for the latest RAV4. The Prologue saw a huge drop off in July, but that’s expected as Honda will soon discontinue this electric SUV. At 354 units sold last month, the Prelude exceeded its sales goal despite complaints that the coupe was too expensive.
“By maintaining our commitment to a balanced lineup of passenger cars and light trucks, Honda and Acura customers are able to find affordable products that meet their needs as market conditions change,” said Lance Woelfer, Vice President of Auto Sales, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Our Honda hybrid models also have been a big hit, bringing in a record number of buyers looking for vehicles with high fuel economy that are still fun-to-drive.”

Acura’s Strong July Led By MDX

Honda’s luxury arm, Acura, also had an encouraging July. Its overall sales increased to 11,996, up by 18.9% versus a year ago. The bulk of these sales came from SUVs (+21.6%), particularly the MDX, which saw sales increase by over 60%. This was the MDX’s best sales month since December 2024.

According to Acura, the ADX leads its segment with a retail share of around 30%. The Integra is having a fantastic year, with July sales up 68.8% and year-to-date sales now up by 45.3%. The single-digit sales of the TLX are due to that sedan having gone out of production last year; Acura is likely clearing out the very last examples still standing on showroom floors.
What It Means

Honda
This is the fourth consecutive month of gains for Honda, setting the scene for a strong finish in 2026. The automaker’s popular hybrids and passenger cars are answering the need for efficient cars as high gas prices eat into buyers’ budgets this year. Woelfer said that the automaker does not need more aggressive incentives to draw showroom traffic, but supplies for some models are down to under 20 days.
With the Prologue soon to go out of production, Honda is focusing on what it does best: Affordable gas and hybrid cars. The automaker is planning a facelift for the key Accord and Passport models, both of which are performing well in 2026. The company will also be extending the life cycles of these and other models, especially after reporting record losses linked to failed EV projects earlier this year.
