The R8, Reborn
Not long after Audi CEO Gernot Döllner called an R8 successor ‘a good idea,’ the folks from Ingolstadt genuinely surprised the world with the premiere of the Nuvolari. Sure, it didn’t carry the R8 name, but it’s pretty clear that the car inspired Audi’s latest supercar.
Underpinned by the Lamborghini Temerario, the Nuvolari follows the same precedent set by the R8, itself based on the Gallardo for the first generation and the Huracan for the second. Unlike the R8, it won’t be a mass-produced model, but rather a limited-run car with fewer than 500 planned to be built.

Ready for America
The exact number that will be made is 499. You can bet your top dollar that many countries are fighting for a Nuvolari allocation. Some will be lucky to even have one that’s coming their way, as many more will have none. With production numbers that limited, spotting one will be a rare occasion, unless your neighbor happens to be a loaded Audi fanatic who’s determined to get every collectible model.
However, if you’ve managed to get tickets to The Quail at Monterey Car Week, consider yourself lucky. That’s because the Nuvolari will be making its U.S premiere at the prestigious and exclusive event, which will be held this Friday. There’s another chance to see it during Car Week, though, as it will be displayed to the public at the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this Sunday.

405 Days
It’s amazing how Audi managed to keep the car a secret until it finally premiered back in June. What’s even more astonishing is the fact that the whole project was completed in just 405 days. In less than 14 months, Audi had managed to gather teams of people, sketch out the design, shake it down, and prepare for its world premiere. Those working within the car industry will know just how hard that is to pull off.
The Nuvolari isn’t merely a reskinned Temerario, the same way the previous R8s weren’t just Gallardos and Huracans with a different body. This time around, it’s the Audi version that’s more exclusive and powerful, making a combined output of 987 hp, 80 hp more than the Lamborghini.
Production of the Nuvolari will commence later this year and reach customers by 2027. There’s a good chance that it’ll be sold out even before the first batch of cars is completed, but here’s to hoping a few of those 499 cars will actually see some track action or some miles on the road.
