The prices of major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP, are surging today.
The upward movement is being cheered by investors in the digital tokens, which have, until recently, experienced a pretty horrendous 2026. But over the last 24 hours, things have finally begun to turn around.
As of the time of this writing, Bitcoin is up nearly 11.5% in the past day, Ethereum is up more than 19%, and XRP is up more than 15%. Other coins are also seeing significant upward swings.
But why are crypto prices surging today? Here are two of the likely biggest factors impacting the crypto markets.
U.S. Treasury doubles its bond buyback program
Yesterday, the U.S. Treasury announced plans to double portions of its bond buyback program. As reported by Reuters, the Treasury will now buy back at least $4 billion worth of 10- to 30-year Treasury bonds per operation instead of $2 billion.
The increased bond buyback is meant to boost market liquidity, which could help spur the economy, which is facing significant headwinds from financial pressures like inflation and geopolitical pressures like the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.
But when market liquidity increases, it also helps to boost stocks and crypto markets.
This is because Treasury buybacks typically result in a drop in bond yields, causing investors to move their money out of the low-risk, low-reward bonds into riskier assets. These riskier assets generally have the potential for much greater rewards (i.e., return on investment).
The first of those riskier assets is usually stocks. Indeed, yesterday the Dow, S&P 500, and the Nasdaq all ended up, snapping a three-day losing streak. Individual stocks also saw big gains, including Apple, Amazon, Tesla, Netflix, and more.
A big driver of these gains was the bond buyback announcement.
But the bond buyback news also seems to have trickled up into the even riskier markets, namely cryptocurrencies.
When investors and big banks are suddenly flush with cash, they tend to pile a portion of it into highly volatile assets like crypto, which can swing widely over a short periods.
But if crypto swings upward—as it is today—investors can stand to make huge gains. And as noted by DailyCoin, that bond buyback-driving upward swing toward crypto had the ancillary effect of forcing shorts to liquidate, which further helped move crypto higher.
Trump urges passage of Clarity Act
The crypto industry was also buoyed yesterday by news that President Trump once again urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act, CNBC notes.
As Fast Company previously reported, the Clarity Act is a major piece of cryptocurrency legislation that would deliver regulatory certainty to the industry.
However, the act has faced pushback from banks, which opposed a provision sought by crypto firms that would allow them to offer yields on customers’ digital assets.
And as MarketWatch has reported, Democrats also have concerns that the act’s ethics provisions don’t prevent the president from earning money from his cryptocurrency ventures.
Regardless, yesterday Trump told reporters ahead of a meeting with crypto industry insiders that Congress should pass the bill.
“We need Congress to take the next step by passing the Clarity Act—a fair version of the Clarity Act,” the president said, adding that the act “will keep us ahead of China, keep us ahead of everyone else, will open the door to the next wave of innovations and innovators.”
Whether or not Trump’s words have any sway over the passage of the act remains to be seen. But the president’s backing has served as a vote of confidence for crypto investors, who see the act’s passage as an important milestone in further legitimizing the cryptocurrency industry.
Any such legitimization could bring more retail investors into the crypto sphere, which would likely have a positive impact on crypto prices.
Crypto surges today, but 2026 has still been a rough year
As of the time of this writing, major tokens are surging over the past 24 hours, including:
- Bitcoin: up almost 11.5% to $71,859
- Ethereum: up 19% to $2,286
- XRP: up more than 15% to $1.1577
While those gains are nothing to sneeze at, they don’t tell the whole story for crypto in 2026, which has been relatively bleak.
Even including today’s gains, Bitcoin is still down 18% year-to-date, Ethereum is down 23%, and XRP is down 37%.
All coins have their own reasons for struggling, but broadly speaking, the crypto industry has faced incredible volatility this year due to regulatory uncertainty, economic fears, and geopolitical conflicts.
For large parts of the year, these headwinds have caused investors to move out of crypto and into safer assets like stocks, and yes, bonds.
Meanwhile, some investors with a taste for risk turned to high-growth chip and memory stocks, such as Micron and SanDisk, which have seen their values soar this year, though they have also been quite volatile.
Whether or not this crypto turnaround lasts remains to be seen. But for today at least, crypto investors have something to smile about.
