There’s no arguing the significance of the Ferrari F40. More than just another run-of-the-mill supercar, the F40 was the last car to receive direct input from founder Enzo Ferrari before his death in 1988. Commissioned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the company, the Ferrari F40 was also the first production car to break the 200 mph (322 km/h) barrier, back in an era that was unfamiliar with the concepts of stability control, airbags, or government-mandated speed limiters.

The lack of driver aids, its benchmark twin-turbo 2.9-liter V8, and its inimitable design are all reasons that made the Ferrari F40 adorn the bedroom walls of many a child growing up in the late 80s. With only around 1,300 examples made, and soaring collector’s prices, not many of those kids have been able to migrate that F40 dream from bedroom wall to garage ornament.
But for someone like seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, one of the world’s best-paid sports stars no less, you might expect an F40 to be an easy addition to the collection. However, despite being a Ferrari F1 driver for nearly two years, it seems like finding the perfect example was quite a challenge. A challenge that has has finally been completed, with Hamilton celebrating his acquisition on social media.
A Car Synonymous With Hamilton
Hamilton’s love for the Ferrari F40 has been well documented. In the past, he’s mentioned his desire to create an F40 successor, which he has dubbed the “F44,” and when announced as a Ferrari driver, he personally made sure an F40 was in the background of his iconic first-day-at-Ferrari picture at the Fiorano test track. Then, during the week of the Japanese Grand Prix this year, Hamilton released one of his now-iconic Japanese montage videos, with none other than a F40 taking center stage as his car of choice.
But while Hamilton himself is no stranger to supercars, having owned several, including a LaFerrari and a Pagani Zonda 760 bearing his own “LH” insignia, he had appeared to have fallen out of love with the idea of collecting. Recent reports indicated that he has parted with his entire collection. “I don’t have any cars anymore. I got rid of all my cars. I’m more into art nowadays,” Hamilton said ahead of last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, reports Reuters.
“If I was going to get a car, it would be the F40. But that’s a nice piece of art.” And get an F40 he has. According to Hamilton, the example he picked up is somewhat of a barnfind, having sat unused in a garage for over 30 years. The images Hamilton shared of the dusty V8-supercar appear to be in Ferrari’s Classiche department in Maranello, Italy. This branch of the Prancing Horse specializes in restoring and preserving classic Ferraris.
In a separate post, Hamilton teased a full video reveal, likely coming to YouTube soon, with the champion driver having started to explore car culture via his YouTube channel. “This is the car of my dreams,” wrote Hamilton. “Massive thank you to everyone who had a hand in this project. This has truly been a dream come true.”
