Kia has just introduced three new GT-badged electric models in Europe. The EV3 GT, EV4 GT, and EV5 GT are the top performance variants of these edgy EVs, which were previewed earlier in 2026. Of the three vehicles, the one that U.S. customers would most likely gravitate towards is the EV5 GT. This quick compact crossover is the perfect Tesla Model Y rival and would fit into a size segment that’s hugely popular here. Now, we have a closer look at the EV5 GT’s specifications for the first time, and it looks like a fun package without resorting to the sort of unruly performance that would frighten first-time EV drivers.

The Sportage-sized EV5 GT looks very much like a downsized EV9. Elaborate lighting and boxy lines combine to create a vehicle that’s the polar opposite of the blobby Model Y. In fact, it looks a lot more like a Rivian R2 in profile. With dual motors and all-wheel drive, the EV5 GT produces 302 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.
Kia claims a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 6.2 seconds, so it’ll likely do the slightly quicker 0-60 run in about six seconds. That’s fun but not outrageous straight-line speed or anything to threaten Hyundai’s N models, but it’s quicker than the base Tesla Model Y Standard (0-60 in 6.8 seconds).
The EV5 GT has an 81.4-kWh battery that enables a WLTP-rated range of 295 miles. By more conservative EPA standards, it’ll probably cover around 250 to 260 miles on a full charge. That’s a shorter range than any Model Y, but should be just about enough for customers who can rely on home charging.

Kia claims the suspension of the EV5 GT—as well as the smaller GT models—has increased spring rates, a firmer ride, and specially tuned anti-roll bars. This should provide sportier, more controlled responses. The most dynamic driving mode is GT Mode, which prioritizes cornering over comfort.
“The GT models make electric driving feel more responsive, more connected and more emotionally engaging, while retaining the everyday usability our customers expect,” said Pablo Martinez Masip, Vice President Product, Marketing & Customer Experience at Kia Europe.
Now For The Bad News

The Kia EV5 GT’s near-perfect blend of size, modern design, and performance would’ve made it a seemingly perfect choice for the U.S., but there are no known plans to introduce it here. The standard EV5 already isn’t on sale in America, so introducing only the performance-oriented GT version is a long shot. Almost a year ago, Kia confirmed the disappointing news, even though the EV5 is making it to Canada.
While a clear reason was not given for excluding the U.S., this could be due to expected profit margins, consumer preferences, and import tariffs. Sales of the similarly-sized EV6 have been poor in 2026, so Kia may feel it is not competitive in that space.
Whatever the reason may be, Americans are missing out on one of the coolest Kia SUVs in some time. That said, buyers looking for a quick electric SUV can opt for the new EV3 GT. It’s not as spacious as the EV5, but it’s even quicker as there’s less weight to move around.
