Volvo pledged itself to an electric future early on, perfectly aligning its product shift from one generation to the next to go from combustion to electric. Perfectly coordinated, a brilliant plan, but at utterly the wrong time. Just as the electric wave was meant to take over, the industry turned, and Volvo has been left trying to pick up the pieces. While some models, like the EX60, are still going electric — and will be brilliant at it — the Swedish automaker is breathing new life into existing mainstays without ditching combustion. One such model is the popular XC40 subcompact crossover, and it’s just been given a big glow-up for the 2028 model year.
