For a brand that built its global reputation on rally-bred performance and the kind of mechanical honesty that gearheads live for, Subaru has spent much of the past decade drifting toward the mainstream. The turbocharged, all-wheel-drive machines that made the brand legendary — cars like the Impreza WRX STI — gave way to a lineup that prioritized crossovers and comfort over corner-carving capability. Now, something is shifting. Subaru appears to be rediscovering its enthusiast roots, and if the signals coming out of Japan are accurate, the payoff could be genuinely exciting.
