Matthew McConaughey is talking politics on social media—and social media users are urging him to not to.
The Texan actor took to X to post a video in which he urged voters to consider independent candidates ahead of the election.
“They’ve been telling us for years that an independent vote is a wasted vote,” McConaughey said in the October 18 video. “Well, a great question for our time is: how’s that unwasted vote been working out for you?”
The comments arrive just weeks before the 2026 midterm elections, which include several tight races across the country, including one in McConaughey’s own home state of Texas—where disgraced former attorney general Ken Paxton is running against Democratic nominee James Talarico for U.S. Senate.
McConaughey continued in the six-minute monologue, making the argument for embracing a non-Democrat or non-Republican.
“Here’s a fact: The number one political identity in America today is not Republican. It is not Democrat. It is Independent. There are more of us than either party, so Independents belong in the fight. Not as a protest, not as a spoiler, but as a real and potential winner,” the Interstellar actor said.
McConaughey did not endorse a specific candidate in the video.
Provocative or privileged?
While the messaging taps into real concerns about political polarization and partisan primary systems, most of the those reacting to the video were quick to reject McConaughey’s call for independent voting, criticizing him for encouraging voters to split the vote.
The video had nearly 6 million views as of midday on Tuesday.
Many took offense to the actor’s advice due to his lack of expertise in politics. One user said on X: “I like Matthew McConaughey’s takes on how to cook a steak or make tuna salad but telling people to vote for independent candidates in ’26 is FUCKING NUTS.”
The user also added, “Your job is to look good, talk slow, and make movies. That’s it.”
The conversation even traveled to other platforms, with another user on Threads saying, “all disrespect intended: Matthew McConaughey, shut the entire fuck up, We are beyond exhausted by privileged, wealthy men thinking their opinions deserve a national platform just because they’re famous.”
Some commenters took the opportunity to poke fun at the actor’s filmography, with one saying “how to lose Matthew McConaughey in 10 days,” a reference to the popular 2003 romcom starring McConaughey and Kate Hudson.
Others had concerns over the speech’s style, which many say had similarities with markers associated with AI-generated sentence construction—think the negative parallelism often present in its speech pattern with phrases like “it’s not this” followed by a separate “it’s that” clause.
“This is the most ChatGPT speech I’ve ever heard. Why? You’re Matthew McConaughey. You have a very distinct and recognizable way of speaking. Why outsource that to AI? I don’t get it,” a user said on X.
For instance, the speech included phrases like “That’s not indecision. It’s judgment” and “That’s not competition. It’s a scrimmage.”
Still, most of the criticism focused on concerns that voting independent tends to sway the vote toward one candidate, rather than earning a true independent win—especially during tight races.
“Independents and third-party candidates have a long history of spoiling close races, not winning them,” one user posted. “[A] ‘fair fight’ that splits the vote usually just hands the seat to the side you like least.”
