Need For Pivot
General Motors (GM) has had an interesting 2026; though nothing groundbreaking has transpired, it hasn’t been an easy year either. On one hand, the brand’s overall sales performance has been okay (despite an industry-wide struggle), but the true pain comes from the EV side of the company. According to one of its latest quarterly sales reports, ICE engine models have risen, but the overall group portfolio has been dragged down by its expansive EV lineup.
If there’s one thing, the repeal of the EV tax rebate and the sudden rise in fuel prices show that the market wants and needs hybrids. This year, we’ve seen that adding a hybrid to your lineup boosts sales, and GM is eager to pivot from its large EV offerings to introduce more hybrids.

GM Hybrids By 2027
GM Authority just reported on GM’s future hybrid plans, which come from the very top. Group CEO Mary Barra announced during the Q3 2026 earnings call that the American auto giant plans to introduce its new hybrid cars as early as 2027. During the same call, she also highlighted that GM will introduce hybrids in multiple key segments where the automaker competes.
She noted that most hybrid sales today come from the compact car, midsize car, and minivan segments, which GM currently has no hybrid offerings in. Barra also notes that the company’s hybrid plans focus on segments where it already has models. Basically, GM plans to introduce hybrid variants of existing popular nameplates rather than develop and build new models, which could be costly.

What’s The Plan?
Barra didn’t dive deep into how GM plans to achieve its hybrid goals, but there are a few ways it could happen. First, her statement that they will focus on existing segments means that we can see hybrid versions of cars like the Equinox, Sierra, Silverado, Trailblazer, etc. These are cars all sold in important, in-demand segments across the U.S., but would also require GM to retool its production facilities to accommodate hybrid production.
We’ve also covered that GM is apparently already working on a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version of its next-generation Silverado and Sierra pickups; both were just heavily refreshed for 2027- who says a new engine isn’t in the cards too?
Meanwhile, the Equinox is set to be built at the car maker’s Fairfax assembly plant in Kansas starting in 2027. It hasn’t been confirmed if the expansion will introduce a hybrid Equinox, but it’s a strong possibility. Either way, GM’s newfound hybrid push will be essential to surviving the automotive industry’s new trends, which seem to favor hybrids over everything else.
