There have been seven Hyundai Sonata generations in North America, starting with the Y2 from 1989, since the Y1 wasn’t sold here. The Y2 had been on the market for six years when the Y3 redesign of the Hyundai Sonata appeared for MY1995, still using powertrains based on Mitsubishi technology, as the Y2 did. The 1999 EF followed with Jaguar-esque lines, gradually moving over to Hyundai-designed engines. But it’s the NF that would be the Sonata of firsts, being the first Hyundai built in the US and the first Sonata with all-Hyundai engines.
