Producing an all-new engine is one of the most expensive, resource-intensive things an automaker can do. So it’s not all that unusual to create a new powerplant by cutting another one down to size, like Jaguar’s supercharged V6 for the F-Type, built from a V8 block, or pairing up a couple of four-pots, like you see in the prototype engine for the Atom 500 V8, built from a couple of Suzuki motorcycle motors, before they swapped it out for a Harley-Davidson V8.
