Slate Auto’s hopes to bring a brand-new, all-electric pickup truck to market for around $20,000 has hit a costly stumbling block now that the Trump administration’s nauseatingly titled ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ has successfully passed. Since its launch in April, the Jeff Bezos-backed, Michigan-based independent has heavily promoted that prices for its first “blank slate” all-electric vehicle would start from “under $20,000,” thanks to a multi-thousand federal tax credit for EV owners signed under the previous administration. With the BBB receiving sign-off from both the US House and Senate, thus ending the EV tax credit in September, there is little hope that Slate’s sub-$20k starting price can be realized.
