You ever hear the one about Ford storing a bunch of unsold Mavericks (the late-1960s car, not the pickup truck of the same name) in a cave in Kansas City in order to sit on them until demand was back up? You may have even seen the photo that’s been going around. Well, as ludicrous as this story may sound, it’s partly true, but the thing is, Ford was likely only stowing them in the short-term, just like they still do for new vehicles. We have no proof that Ford was storing “thousands” of unsold Mavericks for “years on end,” as some versions of the story go, and it’s unlikely it would have been that hard to move brand-new Mavericks in the early 1970s.
