We often gloss over the question of infrastructure when we’re doling out praise for the first person to do this or that. Sure, Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, but, adjusted for inflation, launching Apollo 11 cost NASA a cool $3 billion. In the words of astronaut Michael Collins, “All this is possible only through the blood, sweat, and tears of a number of people.. All you see is the three of us, but beneath the surface are thousands and thousands of others…”
