The Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) voted to approve new zoning for Downtown Boston that would allow towers up to 700 feet tall on certain sites, provided they contained a residential component. The zoning plan goes to Mayor Michelle Wu for her signature.
The BPDA said the zoning “meaningfully prioritizes the ability to build new housing and mixed-use development across Downtown in response to the housing shortage, enabling increased density at the center of Boston’s transit network where it can best be supported. Residential uses will be allowed as-of-right throughout the new zoning districts, whereas large hotel, lab and office uses will require further zoning approval.”
The Boston Business Journal reported that the city began planning new zoning policies for Downtown in 2018, before Wu’s term as mayor and Kairos Shen’s as planning chief. Shen, who was appointed by Wu, has called the zoning overdue.
