Mercedes-AMG, the performance brand synonymous with V8 engines, broke our hearts when it halved the displacement and cylinder count of our favorite V8 sports sedan with the new generation AMG C63 Sedan. As an engineering exercise, the high-performance plug-in hybrid system was fascinating, but as a performance prospect, it was a massive oversight. Fortunately, Mercedes has seen the light and has confirmed it’s developing a new generation of V8 engines to power future AMG models, allegedly with the internal designation of ‘M179’. While details of the new Mercedes V8 remain slim at this point in time, the decision to develop a new V8 when the brand has continually pledged its allegiance to an electric future is a curious one. We’re not complaining.
