The fire that shut down the Novelis aluminum sheet metal plant in New York a couple of weeks ago has been a nightmare for Ford. It was a key supplier for the large amounts of aluminum the company uses in its many aluminum-bodied trucks and SUVs from the F-150 to the Expedition. To keep its most profitable models in production, specifically the F-Series trucks, Ford has shut down production of a couple of slower-selling models. Unpleasant as it is, it makes sense that a massive user of aluminum that has highly publicized its use of the material would be suffering from the loss of a huge aluminum plant. But now the Novelis shutdown is causing problems for other automakers, particularly Stellantis.
