- Russian envoy proposed a 70-mile tunnel connecting Russia and the USA.
- Project is being pitched as a potential venture for Musk’s Boring Company.
- Timing is suspicious as the proposal came before a meeting with Zelensky.
To say President Trump is easily distracted is to say, oh look, a butterfly. Wait, what were we talking about? You get the point and it appears the Russians do too.
How else could you explain an envoy of President Putin proposing a “Putin-Trump” tunnel connecting Russia with the United States?

In a post on X, Kirill Dmitriev tried to get Tesla CEO Elon Musk hyped about the idea of a 70 mile (113 km) tunnel that would run under the Diomede Islands and the Bering Strait. It would connect Russia with Alaska, and Putin’s envoy floated the possibility of Musk’s Boring Company doing the work.
He went on to claim the Boring Company could do it for less than $8 billion, instead of the $65 billion that it would cost otherwise. According to Dmitriev, the project would stand as a symbol of unity, create jobs, and lift both nations’ economies.
The timeline he floated was less than eight years for completion, resulting in what he called a “railroad and cargo link” bridging the two countries.
Coincidence or Calculation?
The timing sure seems suspicious, as it came shortly before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with President Trump at the White House to push for getting Tomahawk cruise missiles. This would allow Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory, with some reports saying they’d be able to hit Moscow.
That would be a game changer and a way to bring the war home to millions of Russians. It would also allow Ukraine to hit targets far more easily than with complicated, long distance drone strikes.
Instead of dismissing the tunnel idea outright, Trump told reporters it was “an interesting idea” and that “we’ll have to think about it.”
Then, in a scene that Russian intelligence officers could only dream of, the U.S. President asked Zelensky what he thought. However, this was no fantasy as it was done in front of cameras. Unsurprisingly, Zelensky replied that he was “not happy” about it.
