If you’re planning a ski trip this season and want high-altitude snow, athlete-level terrain, and family-friendly vibes, Copper Mountain should be on your radar. Today we spent Black Riday skiing and cheering as we kicked off our ski season. This experience reminded me why this Colorado resort earns a spot on so many must-ski lists–especially for the early season.

A Quick Trip with Big Winter Payoff
My family flew in from NYC to Colorado for a very non-traditional Thanksgiving. We planned a mix of skiing and spectating—and Copper delivered. This trip gave me and my husband the weekend off of cooking and cleaning while also allowing us to do what we love–be outdoors. We picked Copper for the ski racing event AND because they are reliable when it comes to snowmaking. The resort sits at 9,712 feet and stretches up to over 12,000, so early-season snow isn’t a gamble. In fact, while nearby resorts were still waiting on terrain, Copper had top-to-bottom skiing ready for holiday crowds and hosted a major race event without breaking a sweat.

East Village: Your Launch Point for Adventure
We based ourselves in East Village, home to the Super Bee lift and the early-season training grounds for the U.S. Ski Team. It’s also where we booted up for day one. From here, it’s easy to explore the mountain—whether you’re chasing corduroy or catching views from the lift.
The Super Bee gives you fast access to long, rolling runs like Copperopolis (a family favorite) and lets you sneak peeks at race action if it’s happening. The lift lines were minimal, the snow coverage was surprisingly solid for November, and the energy? Pure mountain magic.

Why Copper Works for Ski Families
Copper has over 2,500 acres of terrain and a layout that naturally separates beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers. That makes it easier to keep the whole family happy. Their shuttles connect the village areas seamlessly, and the lift network is modern and efficient. For kids and adults who love parks, Copper is a trusted option. They are creative and devoted to building the best parks in the land. When the snow isn’t cooperating, Copper has a Woodward INDOOR facility. It’s full of trampolines and foam pits and kids absolutely love it.
Add in friendly staff, great ski school options, and solid dining in Center Village, and you’ve got a destination that’s as manageable as it is exciting. Note: Do not sleep on the mini donuts at Sugar Lips! You can watch the mini donuts being prepared fresh while you wait — it’s part of the fun, especially for kids (or adults with a sweet tooth).

Bonus: Big Event Energy Without the Hassle
While we came for the skiing, we got a taste of race-day excitement too. Copper hosted an international men’s Giant Slalom race over the weekend, and while we didn’t park ourselves in the grandstands all day, it was fun to watch athletes tear down icy courses and interact with fans.
The sponsor village was buzzing, cowbells were ringing, and the pros were incredibly approachable—posing for photos and signing autographs for kids between runs. It added a layer of excitement and inspiration to the trip that you can’t manufacture.
Final Take: Copper Is Built for Families Who Ski Hard and Love Winter
From the moment we stepped off the plane to the final ski run of the weekend, Copper reminded us why we keep coming back to the mountains. It’s a place that values athletes and families equally—a rare balance in the ski world.
If you’re looking for a Colorado resort that feels big but skis easy, Copper is worth your family’s attention this winter.
