For a couple of decades, the Ford Focus stood as one of the most popular compact cars in the United States. It was introduced in 1999 as a replacement for the Escort, which was axed just a few years later following a multi-decade run. When the Focus first hit the market, it was also one of the cheapest compacts folks could buy. It was even priced lower than most Japanese imports it was competing against.
