Last September, Big Lots declared bankruptcy and shuttered its stores, liquidating all its merchandise. Soon after, Variety Wholesalers, a discount retailer with more than 400 stores in the U.S., agreed to take over hundreds of leases and operate the stores under the Big Lots Brand. Variety is the parent company of Roses, Maxway, Super 10 and other bargain shopping chains.
25 Big Lots will reopen in North Carolina, eight in South Carolina, ten in Tennessee, and 11 in Georgia.
Fast Company reports that Big Lots is, in many ways, a new company now, as Variety has an established way of operating and is likely to put its own spin on things. A Variety spokesperson said it plans to sell “new categories of merchandise.”
