In connection with its acquisition by biotech royalty aggregator Xoma Royalty Corp., Generation Bio Co. has terminated the lease for its Cambridge headquarters. The Boston Business Journal reported that Generation Bio paid $21.5 million to an affiliate of BioMed Realty to exit its 71,500 square feet of research and development, laboratory and office space at 301 Binney St.
The lease on the space wasn’t set to expire until 2029. Generation Bio had been headquartered at 301 Binney since 2018.
The company had 174 employees at the end of 2023, but subsequently laid off most of its team in 2024 and 2025. Xoma has recently bought up several distressed Boston-area biotechs, including Waltham biotech Mural Oncology plc, reported the Business Journal.Â
Coincidentally, 301 Binney St. recently lost another tenant to an acquisition, as Kros Bio exited its lease for about 40,500 square feet last year after being acquired by Concentra Biosciences.
