The Countdown to the C9 Corvette Has Begun
The Chevrolet Corvette C8 has officially lost its new kid status. As the first mid-engine Corvette, it shook up America’s sports car scene, but now it’s inching toward retirement. Chevy just confirmed there won’t be any more core C8 variants after the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X, which is a pretty big hint that the next-gen C9 is already cooking behind the scenes.
GM isn’t spilling any secrets about its next sports car just yet, but a recent interview with CEO Mary Barra might have accidentally let something slip. As cameras rolled through GM’s Technical Center in Michigan, there was a glimpse of what looked suspiciously like a next-level Corvette concept hiding in plain sight.
AI Is Changing How GM Designs Cars
The interview focused on how AI is reshaping GM’s approach to car development. Barra shared that GM now uses AI to predict a car’s aerodynamics before any physical prototype is built or a wind tunnel is used. Designers can adjust shapes digitally and get immediate feedback on airflow and efficiency, cutting out the long waits of traditional methods.
It’s not just engineers benefiting from the new tech. At GM’s Design Center, designers can now turn rough sketches into realistic renderings in minutes rather than weeks. That gives more experimental ideas a chance to be explored before any final decisions are made.
Amid all the discussion about technology, a striking, low-slung sports car stood out in the background. Designers were working on digital sketches and full-size clay models with bold proportions, a sharply styled nose, large wheels pushed to the corners, and a cockpit that looked inspired by aviation. The question is: Was that our first look at the C9?

We’ve Seen This Corvette Before
As much as we’d love to believe the hype, the car in the background is actually something we’ve seen before. Based on the visible design details, the clay model and digital renderings closely match the Corvette CX concept that GM revealed earlier as part of its broader exploration of the Corvette’s future. That concept features a futuristic hypercar silhouette, fighter jet-inspired canopy, and an all-electric quad-motor powertrain producing more than 2,000 horsepower.
Our guess? This isn’t the C9’s big debut. It’s more like a peek into the wild ideas GM’s designers are tossing around as they dream up what comes after the C8. The next Corvette will probably dial things back compared to the CX concept, but don’t be surprised if some of those wild shapes and tech bits sneak into the real thing.
One thing’s for sure: the next Corvette is already taking shape, even if it’s still locked away from prying eyes.
