CVS Health Corp. has opened the first of 64 retail locations acquired from Rite Aid in the Pacific Northwest, beginning with a former Bartell Drugs store in Newcastle, Washington.
The site, located at 6939 Coal Creek Parkway SE, marks the beginning of a conversion and major expansion for the nation’s largest pharmacy chain and signals the beginning of CVS’s full-scale integration of the Rite Aid portfolio, which includes 20 Bartell locations. CVS aims to have all 64 stores across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho open by October, reported the Puget Sound Business Journal.
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved CVS’s acquisition of the Rite Aid locations as part of the latter’s restructuring. The acquisition nearly doubles CVS’s footprint in the region, bringing its store count to over 130 across the three states. CVS has announced plans to close 270 underperforming locations in 2025 while investing $20 billion to modernize its digital infrastructure and expand care delivery services.
