Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
On the surface, this might seem like a formula to get whatever you want from God, the desires of your heart. But is it?
The first thing this verse tells us is to delight ourselves in the Lord. This is much more than legalistic obedience to a set of rules, or even faithfully doing what God requires. It is taking joy in the Lord and in an intimate relationship with Him. It wants Him more than anything else.
And when that is true in my life, He will give me the desires of my heart. But that may not be what you might expect. If my delight is in the Lord, the desires of my heart will not be what they might otherwise be. They will not be for the perishable things or pleasures of this world. Instead, they will be for the things of God. My desire will be for Him. And that is what He will give me, drawing me ever closer to Himself.
