The L5P Duramax diesel V8 is what powers heavy-duty work trucks like the 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and is an amazing powerhouse. It didn’t exactly start off that way back in 1984 when GM first started putting diesel V8s into their heavy-duty pickup trucks. First there was the normally aspirated 6.2-liter, and then came the 6.5-liter turbo-diesel V8. Both were low on power and highly problematic, leaving fans of GM trucks without a decent diesel option. For the 2001 model year, partnering with Isuzu, GM shook the pick-up truck world with the introduction of the Duramax. Like anything new, there were some bugs to work out.
