A fire was reported aboard the amphibious USS New Orleans (LPD-18) on Wednesday off the coast of Okinawa.
“Crews are responding to a fire aboard USS New Orleans this afternoon, Aug. 20, which is in the vicinity of Okinawa, Japan,” a Navy statement to USNI read.
“We will provide more details as they become available.”
No initial reports of crew injuries were recorded, and while the fire has been contained it has not been extinguished, according to the outlet.
A video showcasing two water cannons dousing the assault ship were seen in footage from Japanese broadcaster NHK.
“The crew is currently engaged in firefighting efforts, but we have requested the Japan Coast Guard to provide firefighting assistance,” an official from the Coast Guard told the foreign outlet.
Officials did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment.
The USS New Orleans is a transport dock with the ability to reel in CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters, MV-22 Ospreys and Marine Corps assets.
