When you drive down Southfield Freeway to Dearborn, you’re quickly surrounded on all sides by the various facilities owned and operated by the Ford Motor Company. Many of them aren’t particularly recognizable, with the exception of one towering rectangle. This monolith is the Ford World Headquarters, often referred to as the “Glass House.” It’s 12 stories tall, and it has stood since 1956. It’s literally older than the Mustang. It became a billboard announcing Ford’s victory at Le Mans both in the 1960s and in 2016. It had a somewhat strange appearance in the Disney movie Flubber starring Robin Williams (Williams’ character wanted to sell his flying flubber-powered car idea to the company). This building has a lot of history with Ford, but it won’t for much longer, as the company is going to tear it down once it’s done building its new headquarters.
