Three years after being rebuffed by city planners, Hines is back with another proposal for a supertall on the site of the former campus of Pacific Gas & Electric in San Francisco. Part of a redevelopment of the PG&E campus, the proposed office tower at 77 Beale St. would rise to a height of 1,225 feet, making it the tallest building on the West Coast.
The climate for development has changed locally since 2022, reported the San Francisco Business Times. Mayor Daniel Lurie told the Business Times that San Francisco’s comeback “depends on bold ideas and real investment,” describing the project as “exactly the kind of progress our city needs.”
It’s likely the city will work with Hines this time around to create a development agreement for the project, Leigh Lutenski, director of development for San Francisco’s office of economic and workforce development, told the Business Times.
“This isn’t really about building one tower, it’s about investment, and reshaping and remaking an entire city block, which is really exciting to us as we’ve undergone significant effort to bring new investment to San Francisco,” she said.
