- Civic Type R may soon gain a sharper track-focused variant.
- The HRC concept preview hints at aero and chassis upgrades.
- Japanese reports suggest pricing near ¥10,000,000 ($63,400).
The Honda Civic Type R has spent the past year fending off retirement rumors, especially after “Ultimate Edition” models appeared to signal a farewell in Europe. Yet the story may not be ending quite so quietly. Recent reports from Japan and a newly revealed prototype suggest the hot hatch may still have one final chapter left.
Instead of slipping away, the model could receive a track-focused variant inspired by the race car competing in the Super Taikyu series. The version is rumored to debut in September 2026, potentially serving as a swan song for the current generation.

The best indication of that is the camouflaged prototype by HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) that was showcased at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January 2026. Compared with the standard Type R, the prototype featured more aggressive aerodynamics, including revised bumper intakes, wider front fenders with integrated vents, sharper side skirts, a more prominent diffuser, and a new rear wing.

While the HRC-spec Civic Type R appeared in concept form, Honda suggested development is ongoing with the goal of commercialization. Technical specifications remain undisclosed, although the company promised further refinements to handling.

The aerodynamic and chassis upgrades could be paired with weight-saving measures and mild tweaks to the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, such as improved cooling and a revised exhaust. Together, these changes could make the Type R even quicker around a circuit, potentially targeting new front-wheel-drive lap records.
Japanese outlet Motor Fan reports that the model may also receive a new 9-inch infotainment display with Google built-in, similar to the system found in the updated Civic and the new Prelude.
How Much Could The New Type R Cost?

According to Best Car, the new flagship Civic Type R trim could arrive with a price tag of ¥10,000,000 (equal to $63,400 at current rates) in its home market. That would be more than double the price of the base Type R, which currently starts at ¥4,997,300 ($31,600) in Japan. Even the pricier Type R Racing Black Package is listed at ¥6,179,000 ($39,200), matching the Honda Prelude.
In the US, the 2026 Civic Type R already carries a higher entry price of $46,895, despite the absence of visual or mechanical updates. Still, if the Japanese reports hold true, a more aggressive farewell version of the FL5 generation may be waiting in the wings. Ideally, the HRC version would not remain exclusive to the Japanese market.
