If you had asked Mercedes-Benz in 2021 if the EQS was a true S-Class model, it would have given you a resounding yes. Or at least as resounding as the German automaker gets. “The EQS will be the S-Class of electric vehicles,” execs like VP of EV architecture Christoph Starzynski said at the time. But Mercedes-Benz might be changing its mind on that, or it might never have believed it to begin with. In a recent interview, design chief Gorden Wagener hinted that it was not intended to be like an S-Class, and that maybe Benz shouldn’t have marketed it that way.
