If you think you need a Harvard-level degree in reasoning to understand Mercedes’ model strategies, you’re not alone. After all, there are various classes, two- or three-digit model numbers, and separate high-performance cars that will typically have an AMG badge. However, Mercedes does like to throw a curveball occasionally and sometimes sells a high-performance vehicle without an obligatory AMG emblem. This was the case with the E550 sedan from the mid-2010s, and if you look at buying a used version of this car today, you get plenty of bang for your buck from a non-AMG model. But why did the German company decide to take this approach?
