When the Mitsubishi Eclipse launched for the 1990 model year, it landed at exactly the right time. The Japanese economic boom of the 1980s had reached a boiling point, and a wave of affordable and stylish Japanese sports cars were hitting our shores. Buyers couldn’t buy them fast enough, and Mitsubishi had a plan to beat them all. With plenty of help from Chrysler, the Japanese company concocted a low, sleek sports car with seating for four, available AWD, and most importantly, one of the most legendary engines of all time: the 4G63T.
