Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa has stated, in a recent interview at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car summit, that the Japanese marque’s current financial issues stem back to an overly ambitious goal of selling eight million vehicles worldwide, made in 2015. As of 2024, Nissan is well short of those lofty goals, overseen by former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn (who’s endured a few issues of his own) and ended the year with sales of ‘only’ 3.3 million. It’s no real wonder that the company is now closing down seven of its 17 facilities worldwide, has started reducing its vehicle platforms from 13 to seven, and has “temporarily” paused work on models planned for launch after 2026, including a new Leaf and the next-generation Sentra as part of a huge 30-car release before 2027.
