A Smarter R1 Arrives
After outlining updates for the Rivian Electric Delivery Van (EDV), the EV maker has released software version 2026.03 for its first- and second-generation R1 models. The update introduces Apple Watch integration and revisions to several drive modes.
Like Tesla, Rivian now allows owners to use their Apple Watch to control certain vehicle functions without a smartphone. Gen 1 vehicles – models built through 2024 – can be locked and unlocked by tapping the ‘lock’ icon, while Gen 2 models – built for 2025 and later – support passive entry, automatically unlocking when the digital key is detected in proximity. Rivian said that its Apple Watch app will be updated over time.
Fine-Tuning the Drive Experience
As for drive mode updates, Sport Mode has now been expanded to base dual-motor models. The update allows compatible Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles to remain at ‘Standard’ ride height instead of automatically lowering the suspension. Rivian said the change was introduced for owners who appreciate Sport Mode’s sharper responsiveness but prefer the look and feel of a higher ride height.
Meanwhile, Launch Mode is now available on Gen 1 quad-motor models and both generations of dual-motor Performance variants. Rivian’s term for launch control, the feature can be activated by selecting Sport Mode, tapping the flag icon, and then holding the brake and accelerator simultaneously.
Rivian also introduced a new ‘Lower’ setting, in addition to ‘Low,’ within Kneel Mode. The feature allows R1 models to drop by roughly an extra inch on average, depending on the variant and tire setup. Given the size of the R1T and R1S – comparable to a Ford F-150 Lightning – the added drop should make getting in and out of the vehicles easier.
Practical Improvements
Other updates in version 2026.03 include a cold-weather indicator that shows how much energy is being used to keep the battery warm, as well as added flexibility that allows owners to adjust specific Drive Modes and settings while certain Gen 1 Driver+ and Gen 2 Autonomy+ features are engaged.
These updates should help narrow the gap between Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1 models, making them feel more refined and intuitive as Rivian prepares for its next phase. That next chapter begins with the all-new R2 – a smaller, more affordable EV expected to start at around $45,000, placing it squarely in Tesla Model Y territory and positioning it as the brand’s potential volume seller.
