Front-wheel drive cars are a conundrum in the enthusiast world. We’ve been trained to believe that for a vehicle to be “fun”, it either needs to send the power to the rear wheels to improve handling and better induce oversteer, or all four, for ultimate traction and cornering stability. The other configuration is usually a nonstarter for most drivers, because FWD equals understeer in their eyes. However, over the decades, there have been outliers. A select few models that have been expertly honed into elegant dance partners despite their inherent handicaps, turned into canyon carvers and track monsters so sharp, they’ve earned their place in the record books.
