German engineer Felix Wankel patented his new rotary engine design in 1934. Over the years, several automakers made an effort to turn the Wankel engine into a commercially viable form of propulsion. However, it was the Japanese company Mazda that really embraced the rotary engine, creating a range of performance cars powered by the high-revving mill.
