This heartfelt piece comes to us from The Pet Fund, the largest nonprofit in the U.S. dedicated to funding veterinary care for companion and service animals in need. For more than two decades, they’ve worked tirelessly to keep loved animals out of shelters and with the families who care for them. We’re honored to share their story as part of Catster’s Heroes of the Pet World series.
When pet owners cannot afford needed veterinary care for their companion animals, the options are often surrendering loved animals to shelters, or devastatingly, being forced to consider economic euthanasia.
No one wants to think about the possibility of putting an animal down or giving them up to a shelter for treatable medical conditions simply because the costs of the treatment are too high.
With the ever-increasing cost of veterinary care, this is a reality for many companion and service animals when their families have no other options. There are no government programs or safety nets that provide help with companion or service animal medical care.

The Pet Fund is the largest nonprofit in the United States that pays for veterinary care for pet owners in need. We are a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that has worked for over 23 years to keep loved companion and service animals out of shelters by funding medical care. We also work to educate pet owners about the need for preventative care for their animals.
During that time, we have seen cancer rates in companion animals skyrocket, along with a sharp increase in the cost of all veterinary care. This has added to the challenge of funding and of finding new avenues for treatment.
Right now, The Pet Fund has an incredible opportunity: a challenge grant from a private donor that will match all gifts, dollar for dollar, up to $100,000 through the end of July.
Every contribution, big or small, goes directly toward keeping pets with the people who love them, providing treatment, and preventing unnecessary euthanasia.
If you’re in a position to help, even a small amount, please consider supporting this life-saving work.
