- Neither Cybertruck was plugged in when the fire began.
- The EV trucks may have been stored at a service center.
Throughout the early part of 2025, a series of Teslas were set on fire across the United States and Canada. The incidents appeared tied to backlash surrounding Elon Musk’s controversial stint in the White House and his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Now two more Tesla Cybertrucks have been destroyed by fire under unclear circumstances in California.
The pair of Cybertrucks was parked side by side in a rooftop parking lot in Santa Monica on Wednesday. The local Santa Monica Fire Department was called to the site just after 3:15 p.m., but by the time firefighters arrived, both electric pickup trucks were already engulfed in flames.

Footage from the scene shows the two Cybertrucks completely destroyed by the blaze, leaving behind only sections of their stainless steel body panels and portions of the steel platform.
According to NBC LA, several other Tesla models were parked nearby. That has prompted speculation the vehicles may have been placed there by a Tesla Service Center on the same road. Alternatively, because the parking structure is attached to the Anara Santa Monica apartment complex, the trucks may have belonged to residents.
What Caused It?
Regardless of why the Cybertrucks were parked there, police are investigating how they caught fire. Neither pickup was plugged in or charging at the time, which rules out a malfunctioning charger as the cause.
It certainly does look suspicious to see two Cybertrucks catch fire like this, especially given the rather charged political climate at the moment. Still, there will be no official explanation until investigators finish their work. Could one of the trucks have spontaneously combusted while parked, perhaps due to a battery fault? It is possible, though there have been no verified reports of other Cybertrucks doing anything similar so far.
