
A 25-acre site in Shrewsbury, MA is planned to hold a grocery store, 270 apartments and a mix of smaller retailers along the town’s busy Route 9 thoroughfare, the Boston Business Journal reported. The project just outside of Worcester would fill in a rare undeveloped gap on Route 9, which is otherwise lined with commercial, industrial and residential development along most of its span between Worcester and Boston.
The Route 9 project, presented to the Shrewsbury Planning Board this month, would demolish a vacant 77,000-square-foot former bottling plant for the long-ago Chelmsford Ginger Ale company at 335 Maple Ave. Two other developments were approved by Shrewsbury officials earlier in January: a 300-unit residential development at 104 Main St. and a 196-unit project at 409 South St.
Both are so-called “Chapter 40B” projects, named for the state law that enables developers to build more densely if they rent a greater share of apartments under affordability restrictions.
